Mayor Phil Amicone and his challenger in the Republican primary Vincenza Restiano undergo disagreed about nearly everything this season so why should their assessment of voter turnout on Primary Day be any different? Voter turnout was light this morning said David Simpson normally Amicone’s City Hall spokesman who has been working most recently on the race.
Reached early this afternoon. Restiano said the turnout seems normal light in one displace but good in an another. If turnout holds. Simpson said perhaps only 3,500 of the 23,000 enrolled Republicans or 15 percent may alter it to the polls. Restiano had a different calculation saying some 8,800 Republican voters generally show up at primaries and that was probably as good an calculate as any. In any case turnout is likely to be transport than four years ago when Amicone. Restiano and Assemblyman Michael Spano tusseled for the Republican nomination for the mayoral post being vacated by John Spencer. About 50 percent voted.
So the question comes down to whether one candidates’ voters are turning out in unusual numbers a challenge that won’t be answered until after the polls close. Simpson insisted that three of every four voters polled in recent weeks favored Amicone. Restiano saw things differently: “I got my mesage out. My people are voting.”
